About the Artist

Hello! My name is Madison, and I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I got my BFA in 2017 from Belmont University, and have since spent most of my time working as an art teacher while also working to launch Madison Kent Art. I love to create, and that spirit of constant learning and exploration has followed me throughout my life. I’m always trying to learn new skills and working towards new goals. My artwork is primarily painting, but I also make pottery and dabble in a little bit of everything creative- crafting, music, cooking, and even a growing interest in gardening! When I’m not immersed in a project, I love spending time with my people and being outside. Thank you for your interest in my work! I hope you find something that will become a treasured addition to your space.

Artist Statement

My body of work is connected by a running thread of the idea of “place.” Inspired by both my connection to home and introspective reflection of adventures abroad, my work explores how different places evoke different internal experiences. Whether that be belonging or alienation, nostalgia or discovery, peace or exhilaration, I am catalyzed by the moments in which one pauses and breathes in the spirit of a place and considers their existence in and connection to it. I seek to celebrate that the simplest moments are often the most profound, and how all of those things contribute to a sense of belonging in the world. To me, this profundity can be found in things as ordinary as the welcoming presence of a loved ones’ front door, the buzz and aroma of a European cafe, the delicate vibrancy of a garden, the sounds and vastness of the ocean, the reprieve of nature in the urban landscape, or the way sunlight sparkles through the trees. I am propelled to try to save these things in glimpses made of color and lines. I want to capture that whimsy with gestural marks and layered colors that produce sensational textures that mimic the dichotomy of simplicity and complexity of the stories that make up the places that compose our world.
